She

By Reena Gupta

She can’t remember her childhood,
for She didn’t have any,
Married at a younger age
to the convenience of many.

Bruised and abused with her children in tow,
She was thrown out of her marital home.
The world looked down in astonishment,
And everyone ready to pass judgement.

She had responsibilities thrown in her womb,
Her children whom she could not doom.
She looked at them every day and wished
Why couldn’t they be born to someone rich.

She has surely outlived her unwanted life
For She is no longer anyone’s daughter, sister or wife.
She cannot recall any loving moment,
As She is an easily forgotten past with no claimant.

Suicide is a thought, in abeyance She kept,
Even when her soul reverberated in grief, She simply wept.
She constantly wonders what was the need to be born,
For a life that is nothing but a painful scorn.

She prays to the Lord to pardon her banishment,
To let her lay down in peace at this instant.
Life seems to be slipping away from her
Yet there is no one to ever grieve on her.

She is afraid and full of fear,
Lest She died with no one to share.
But, like a Phoenix She will overcome agony
Forever to put an end to all her misery.

Where is the women-an epitome of love, care and beauty?
Alas! Lord She is simply subjected to everyday cruelty.
A roof over her head and some food to feed,
A comforting embrace is all that She needs.

God! She longs for your blessings and forgiveness,
To traverse this journey in fulfillment.
Time is not lost for much needed compassion
For it is to be chosen to live in Hell or Heaven.

She urges you to hold her hand and lead her through these
She simply desires to be happy and to be at peace.
With your abundant love, She shall overcome all travails,
Just love and harmony for her, need to now forever prevail.

  • Thanks for sharing your poem, Reena!
Loved the title ‘She’. It resonated deeply with me, beautifully crafted truth-telling of the burdens a “She” carries for being a “She” (even today). Use of words envoke emotions and is truly captivating. “She” shall overcome all travails 👌. Kudos to you for writing this incredibly moving poetry.
I always remembered you as a girl with an excellent sense of humor, but it is nice to see the poet in you and your ability to convey your thoughts and emotions in a respectful and glamorous manner. 🤗 🥰

  • Mixed feelings of sadness, hope. Not clear whether She is an epitome of society, or an individual potray or poetess’ personal experience.
